12. Denning Roy, A letter from Malta, 23\7\1915
Roy Denning was in the first ATC Engineers and embarked
on 7 September 1914 for service overseas. He returned to Australia on 8
October 1918 having seen service in Gallipoli and the Western Front.
This very descriptive letter describing the Gallipoli
landing and subsequent fighting was written by Roy Denning in Malta in
1916 to his mother in Yass. Eventually it came into the possession of the
Shaw family of Yass. Roy was the brother of Alice Mary Shaw, the
Lady Mayoress of 1918.
The letter was given to the Yass and District Historical
Society by Sister Rae Burgess whose mother was a Shaw. this information
is courtesy of the Yass and District Historical Society. The letter has
subsequently been editted by Jane Nauta and published by the Yass
& District Historical Society and is available for purchase.
